Medical care has come a long way in recent years, allowing us to combine ocular health with light dermatological care, providing a non-invasive approach to enhancing the look of your skin!
A photofacial uses IPL technology to improve the appearance of skin by evening skin texture and reducing hyperpigmentation by stimulating collagen production in the skin.
Understanding IPL Photofacial Treatment
An IPL photofacial treatment is a non-invasive skin procedure that uses light-based technology to improve the appearance of skin by targeting various skin conditions.
Despite being called a “photofacial,” IPL therapy can be used on several areas of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.
How Does IPL Technology Work?
IPL refers to Intense Pulse Light, a technology that emits multiple wavelengths of light to target specific skin issues.
These broad-spectrum light pulses penetrate the skin’s surface, which are then absorbed by skin pigments and blood vessels. This absorption process heats and destroys the targeted cells, and constricts blood vessels, promoting collagen production, and skin renewal, leaving behind a smoother, and more even-toned complexion.
This technology behind IPL photofacials provides longer-lasting results when compared to other skin treatments like traditional facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.
IPL technology emits multiple wavelengths of light to target various concerns and improve the appearance of the skin, including:
- Acne scars
- Hyperpigmentation
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Rosacea
- Sun Spots
Benefits of IPL Photofacials
Photofacials can target many skin conditions in one session, from reducing the appearance and texture of skin to improving signs of aging. This non-invasive form of skin treatment includes several benefits:
- Reducing Hyperpigmentation: Photofacials target uneven skin tone marked by sun spots, acne scars, and redness, reducing hyperpigmentation, and creating a more even skin tone.
- Reducing Fine Lines and Wrinkles: IPL technology helps stimulate collagen production, helping to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improving skin texture by making skin appear tighter, brighter, and smoother, reducing the look of pores, and providing a more youthful appearance.
- Minimal Downtime: The non-invasive nature of this treatment means photofacials require little to no downtime. You can often return to your daily activities after a session, making this a convenient option for busy individuals.
- Long-Lasting Results: The process of skin cells converting light to heat means that photofacials can penetrate deep into the skin to target concerns, providing long-lasting results.
Are Photofacials for Everyone?
IPL photofacials are safe for most skin types and treat various concerns but they may not be suitable for everyone. During your initial consultation, we’ll determine whether this treatment is right for you.
What to Expect During Your Session
Being informed on what to expect during your photofacial session will help you feel more comfortable, relaxed, and prepared for the treatment.
Pre-Procedure Consultation
Before your first session, you’ll have a consultation with our team. This will include a review of your medical history, which skin imperfections you would like to target, a discussion about your expectations regarding treatment, and give you a rough outline of the duration of your treatment.
During your consultation, we’ll provide pre-procedure care instructions, such as avoiding sun exposure and tanning beds for a few weeks before treatment and avoiding direct sun exposure by wearing sun protection. Remember to inform our team about any active skincare products you’re currently using, like retinoids.
During the Session
On the day of your photofacial, try to arrive at your appointment with a fresh, clean, make-up-free face and no contact lenses. If this isn’t possible, don’t worry! We have all the necessary supplies available to cleanse your skin and remove your lenses.
We’ll begin the session by applying a cooling gel to the treatment area. This gel helps to protect the skin and enhance the effectiveness of the light pulses. You’ll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the intense light.
The IPL device is then gently moved across your skin, delivering controlled pulses of light to the targeted areas. You may feel some pressure, heat, and bright light from the IPL device. This sensation can feel like mild stinging or snapping, however, most people report minimal discomfort. If you feel any pain or discomfort during your procedure, please notify your technician right away!
The entire session typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
The results from a photofacial are gradual, however, some individuals may notice an improvement in their skin after a few sessions!
Treatment Aftercare
The non-invasive nature of an IPL photofacial means no downtime! After your session, you’re free to continue with your daily activities.
After your session, it’s vital to follow post-procedure care instructions to help promote healing and optimal results. This includes:
- Avoiding Sun Exposure: Protect your skin with sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight to prevent further damage.
- Using Gentle Skincare Products: Opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers to soothe your skin.
- Staying Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and promote healing.
It’s normal to experience some mild redness or swelling after treatment, but this usually subsides within a few hours or a day. Avoid picking, scratching, and touching your face unnecessarily to promote healing.
Throughout your IPL photofacial treatment, avoid undergoing other cosmetic treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Undergoing various treatments may irritate your skin, so it’s ideal to focus on one treatment.
